Spam(mer) prevention

Post by tigersharke »

I am sure this is something that has not been overlooked but it may not yet be setup to the fullest extent or optimized.

The more popular this forum gets, the more likely it will become a magnet for spammers. The iXSystems community forums denies as many as 10 likely spammers each weekday and removes approximately one spam post a day that gets through. Without constant monitoring and zero automation, both forum sites and wiki sites will become nothing more than repositories for the various mostly Indiaoriginating promotion of websites and products.

I strongly recommend spam detection that works via keyword (regex is even better) for postings, and to prevent spammer accounts prior to their posting (or spam in profile) use a combination of project honeypot search, blacklist search, weighted origin country, and weighted ASN. This is what has greatly reduced the spammers on the iX community forums. They use different forum software but the tools described above should have a version (or a similar tool/option/technique) for most if not all types of forum software. It will take some time to tune, but in the case of the regex, I can help by providing what has been effective to the admins here. If the weighted country and ASN are options here, I can provide the weights and codes used as well.

One of the most humorous things about a recent spammer at iX community, was that the advertisement was for India tax software/forms, there is less than 2% of valid users from India on the site, so in truth that spam was more likely to target another spammer.. aside from search result manipulation of course.

Something like this can prevent spammers:
https://www.phpbb.com/customise/db/exte ... orum_spam/
https://www.phpbb.com/customise/db/exte ... cleantalk/

Both are working on phpBB3.2

Thank you! I will look into both. I havent had anytime to give this forum the moderation or administration it needs. Real life can be consuming for me. I have posted a message asking for anyone interestes in helping to pm me. If you or someone you know might be interested, shoot me a pm. Those with administration experience will also be considered for administration access as well.

You can take a look at the project Honeypot.

When I was in charge of comments and forums, I always use Honeypot to stop spam with success.
